Millions upon millions of years ago in the darkness of prehistory,
humanity was an infant, a child of Mother Nature, unawakened, dreamlike,
wrapped in the cloak of mental somnolence. Recognition of egoity slept;
instinctual consciousness alone was active. Like a stream of brilliance across
the horizon of time, divine beings, manasaputras, sons of mind, descended among
the sleeping humans, and with the flame of intellectual solar fire lighted the
wick of latent mind, and lo! the thinker stirred. Self-consciousness wakened,
and man became a dynamo of intellectual and emotional power: capable of love,
of hate, of glory, of defeat. Having knowledge, he acquired power; acquiring
power, he chose; choosing, he fashioned the fabric of his future; and the
perception of this ran like wine through his veins.
Knowledge, more knowledge, and still greater knowledge was required by
the maturing humans who looked with gratitude to the godlike beings who had
come to awaken them. For many millennia they followed their guidance, as
children lovingly follow the footsteps of their mother.
As the ages rolled by, a circulation of divine instructors succeeded
these primeval manasaputras and personally supervised the progress of
child-humanity: they initiated them in the arts and sciences, taught them to
sow their fields with corn and wheat, instructed them in the ways of clean and
moral living — in short, established primeval schools of training and
instruction open and free to all to learn of things material, intellectual, and
spiritual. At this early period there were no Mystery colleges: the ancient
wisdom was the common heirloom of all mankind, for as yet there had been no
abuse of knowledge, and hence no need for schools kept hid and sacred from the
world. Truth was freely given and as freely accepted in that golden age. (Cf.
H. P. Blavatsky Collected Writings 14:248-9.)
The race was young; not all were adept in learning. Some through past
experience in former world periods learned quickly and with ease, choosing
intuitively the path of spiritual intellection; others, less awake, were good
though wayward in progress; while a third class of humans, drugged with
inertia, found learning and aspiring a burden and became laggards in the
evolutionary procession. To them, spiritual apathy was preferable to spiritual
exertion.
Mankind as a whole progressed rapidly in the acquisition of knowledge
and its subsequent use. Some obviously wrought evil — others good. What had
been latent spirituality now became active good and active evil. Suffering and
pain became nature's most merciful method of restoring the heart to its
primeval instinct, that of spiritual choice. As mind developed keener
potentialities and the struggle for mental supremacy overcame the spiritual,
the gift of intellect became a double-edged weapon: on the one hand, the
bringer of spiritual awareness and undreamed of intellectual ecstasy; and on
the other, the wielder of a weapon of destruction, of horror and, in the worst
cases, of deliberate spiritual wickedness — diabolism. As H. P. Blavatsky
wrote:
The
mysteries of Heaven and Earth, revealed to the Third Race by their celestial
teachers in the days of their purity, became a great focus of light, the rays
from which became necessarily weakened as they were diffused and shed upon an
uncongenial, because too material soil. With the masses they degenerated into
Sorcery, taking later on the shape of exoteric religions, of idolatry full of
superstitions, . . . — The Secret Doctrine 2:281
Nature is cyclical throughout: at one time fertile in spiritual things,
at another barren. At this long-ago period of the third root-race, on the great
continent of Lemuria, now submerged, the cycle was against spiritual progress.
A great downward sweep was in force, when expansion of physical and material
energies were accelerated with the consequent retardation and contraction of
spiritual power. The humanities of that period were part of the general
evolutionary current, and individuals reacted to the coarsening atmosphere
according to their nature. Some resisted its down- ward influence through
awakened spirituality; others, weaker in understanding, vacillated between
spirit and matter, between good and evil: sometimes listening to the promptings
of intuition, at other times submerged by the rushing waves of the downward
current. Still others, in whom the spark of intellectual splendor burned low,
plunged headlong downstream, unmindful of the turbulent and muddy waters.
As the downward cycle proceeded, knowledge of spiritual verities and
living of the life in accordance with them became a dull and useless tool in
human hearts and minds. Such folly was inevitable in the course of cosmic
events, and all things were provided for. Just as there are many types of
people — some spiritual, others material, some highly intelligent, others slow
of thought — so are there various grades of beings throughout the universe,
ranging from the mineral, through the vegetable, animal, and human kingdom, and
beyond to the head and hierarch of our earth.
During these first millennia the spiritual head and guardian of the
earth had been stimulating wherever possible the individual fires of active
spirituality. Gradually as knowledge of divine things became abused by those
strong in will but weak in morality, truth was increasingly veiled. The
planetary watcher now felt the need of selecting a band of co-workers to act as
bodyguard and protector of the ancient wisdom. Alone a handful of spiritually
illumined human beings, in whom the divine fervor burned bright, acknowledged
wholehearted allegiance to their planetary mentor — the spiritual hierarch of
humanity. Through long ages certain individuals had been watched over and
guided, strengthened and tested in innumerable ways, and those who passed the
test of self-knowledge and self-sacrifice were gathered together to form the
first association of spiritual-divine human beings — the Great Brotherhood. As
G. de Purucker elaborates:
Then was
formed or established or set in operation the gathering together of the very
highest representatives, spiritually and intellectually speaking, that the
human race as yet had given manifestation to; . . .
. . .
the Silent Watcher of the Globe, through the spiritual-magnetic attraction of
like to like, was enabled to attract to the Path of Light, even from the
earliest times of the Third Root-Race, certain unusual human individuals, early
forerunners of the general Manasaputric "descent," and thus to form
with these individuals a Focus of Spiritual and Intellectual Light on Earth,
this fact signifying not so much an association or society or brotherhood as a
unity of human spiritual and intellectual Flames, so to speak, which then
represented on Earth the heart of the Hierarchy of
Compassion. . . .
Now it
was just this original focus of Living Flames, which never degenerated nor lost
its high status of the mystic center on Earth through which poured the supernal
glory of the Hierarchy of Compassion, today represented by the Great
Brotherhood of the Mahatmans, . . . Thus it is that the Great
Brotherhood traces an unbroken and uninterrupted ancestry back to the original
focus of Light of the Third Root-Race. — The Esoteric Tradition
2:1048-9n
Hence the elder brothers of the race remain "the elect custodians
of the Mysteries revealed to mankind by the divine Teachers . . . and
tradition whispers, what the secret teachings affirm, namely, that these Elect
were the germ of a Hierarchy which never died since that period" (Secret Doctrine 2:281) — since the foundation and establishment of the Great
Brotherhood some 12 million years ago. From this center for millions of years
have been streaming in continuous procession rays of light and strength into
the world at large and, more specifically, into the hearts of those whose lives
are dedicated to the service of truth. From this Fraternity have gone forth
messengers, masters of wisdom, to inspire the grand religions of the past, and
they will continue to send forth their envoys as long as mankind requires their
care.

emocional e o medo.
No
ambiente forte.
Sociais , Combater a Tirania , a Ignorância, o Fanatismo.
O Chakras :
Coronário recebe o influxo do seu ATMA ( DEUS)
O Frontal abre-lhe a
Discernimento
O Cardíaco capacitará a pessoa a perceber as reais
Tudo isto é a Força , Sabedoria e Beleza do Cristo Interior.

To Light a Thousand Lamps by Grace F. Knoche ( Preview).Copyright © by Theosophical University Press. ( TS PASADENA- US) All rights reserved.
The Daily Initiation
Every people has borne the sacred
burden of the Divine in its deepest heart. How strange, with this wondrous
heritage, that we should ever feel "widowed of the presence of the
gods," as though the link with our divine source had become frayed, no
longer assured. We are not the first civilization to feel lost and bewildered,
nor will we be the last, but this does not mean there is no remedy. Help has
always been within our grasp: to ally our whole being with the building
energies of the universe and to refuse to strengthen by default — certainly never
by design — the destructive forces that are ever alert to attack the irresolute
soul. Still, we must persevere, for once we make the choice, all the
"devils" in the underworld of our nature will seemingly be let loose
to test the integrity of our resolve. The more in earnest we are, the more
subtle and persistent the resistance — not instigated by others, but by our own
higher self.
There is nothing mysterious about
this. Probably everyone has had the experience that when we determine to alter
our habitual ways of thinking, everything and everybody appear to conspire
against us. This is inevitable, for intensity of aspiration challenges the gods
who are "jealous" of us humans who venture unprepared into their
domain. Only those who have become near to godlike may enter. And since the
gods are in a profound sense ourselves, the response to our importunate demands
may be a release upon us of an avalanche of unexpended karma from past lives.
This could be shattering to the personal self, but not to the part of us that knows
deep within that we have longed to be tested to the limit of our endurance.
William Q. Judge uses the cryptic
phrase "karmic stamina" in connection with aspirants who may find
themselves momentarily in "a psychic whirl, or a vortex of occultism"
into which others also may be drawn, and where the "germs for good or ill
ripen with activity." (Letters That Have Helped Me 1:20-1) The
outcome will depend not only on our constancy of will and selflessness of
motive, but also upon our reserve of moral and spiritual endurance, our inbuilt
stamina. The word stamina — from the Latin for "warp, thread, fiber"
— is fitting here, for the warp of lengthwise threads on a loom is usually of
stouter twist than the weft, as it is the foundation on which the cross threads
are woven. The daily encounters and interactions with others and the
impingements of events upon us are all karma: the warp represents the
outflowing of past experience, while our reactions, being of our choosing, are
the weft carried by the shuttle of the soul as we weave our present and future
on the warp of the past.
All is not hardship and trial.
Our inner god may be a stern taskmaster, but it is infinitely just and
therefore infinitely compassionate. To be sure, potency of aspiration germinates
whatever seeds of inharmony we have sown, but equally does it quicken the seeds
of nobility in the character so that we are inwardly sustained and encouraged.
In truth, it may shed a flood of light upon our path. Such a resolve finds
resonance in our inmost self, and as we return life after life it leads us on
and on, to take up the charge anew. Every day, every year, every lifetime, we
infuse the ancient resolve with fresh vigor. Katherine Tingley speaks
eloquently to this in her Theosophy: The Path of the Mystic:
A vow is an action rising like a star high above
the level of the common deeds of life. It is a witness that the outer man has
at that moment realized its union with the inner, and the purpose of its
existence, . . .
At that moment the radiant path of light is seen
with the eye of pure vision, the disciple is reborn, the old life is left
behind, he enters a new way. For a moment he feels the touch of a guiding hand
ever stretched out to him from the inner chamber. For a moment his ear catches
the harmonies of the soul.
All this and more is the experience of those who
make this vow with their whole hearts, and as they constantly renew it, and
constantly renew their endeavor, the harmonies come again and again, and the
clear path is once more beheld.
. . . Each effort carves the path of the
next, and in no long time one single moment's silence will bring forth to the
disciple's aid the strength of his soul. — pp. 53-4
Such a vow is a knocking at the
door of our higher self. If the knock is genuine, the illumination and strength
that pour into us can become a transforming influence that may help us to
intuit the higher self's intent for our ordinary self. When the motive to serve
humanity is fortified by will, our life is taken in hand by our higher self,
and we find we are led into situations that test us to the core so that we may
prove our worth and the depth of our aspiration — not for self-benefit, but
that we may bring light and inspiration to others.
The higher self is our real
teacher, our inner buddha. This is a time-honored truth: it places
responsibility for growth, for inner advancement, squarely on ourself. We have
no one but ourself to blame for our fumbles, no one on whom to shift our
burdens. We are our own awakener, our own savior, for we are the steps
we must travel and the truth we so long to find. Yet few of us feel adequate to
fulfill the demands of our dharma, or self-disciplined enough to meet with
equanimity the impact of daily karma. Trust is the key: to trust karma is to
trust ourselves and to trust that we have the inner resources to handle
whatever befalls. Having made the choice to live mindfully, there can be no
turning back. We are not required, however, to take more than one step at a
time; this is our protection, for by meeting life's challenges one day at a
time we gather strength and sufficient wisdom for the daily need.
Once we grasp the fact that we
are the path before us, never again will we know that aching loneliness of
despair, for we shall have come in touch, if ever so fleetingly, with our
light-source. Should periods of despondency return, they need not take firm
hold, for a part of us, having entered into companionship with our higher self,
remains en rapport with the larger fraternity of the spirit that touches every
aspirant on the path. In proportion as we allow our buddha-nature to illumine
our ordinary self will the Tathagata-light, the Christos-sun, irradiate our
being and the path ahead. Since we are one humanity, the lighted path of
a single individual makes the path of all others that much clearer.
It is a truism that no one can
live always on the heights. We are obliged to return to the valleys of daily
experience where we still have lessons to learn. But the panorama seen from the
heights, short-lived as it may have been, is our rod and staff. It takes
courage to allow our higher self to lead us into those circumstances that will
bring to fruition old karmic causes whose effects on ourselves and on others
must now be met. However, once handled, they will be done with. If at times
everything seems at cross-purposes, and every effort we make is countered by
opposition, this is to be expected.
The choice we made to pursue the
compassionate way is by its very nature and goal an upstream endeavor. It is
not a simple thing to go against the current; it demands courage to persist
year in and year out along a course that, even if we know deep down is the true
path for us, may at times appear quite the contrary to our personal self. Yet
when we reflect on it, we are warmed and strengthened by an inner affirmation
that we couldn't have asked for a more magnificent opportunity. To be allowed
by karma to aid, in however minor a degree, in the compassionate order of the
universe: this is to be given a boon that the soul over many lifetimes has
silently yearned for.
We learn early that every
aspiration must be sustained by self-discipline. Today people are stretching
their souls, longing to rise above their ordinary little selves and glimpse a
vision of what is beyond and within. Many of us, however, are so filled with
our own ideas of what life is all about that we are like the student who came
to the Zen monk seeking knowledge. "Teach me, Roshi, what Zen is."
The Zen master invited him to tea. He started pouring tea into the teacup, and
he poured and poured and poured until the student could stand it no longer and
almost shouted: "But the cup is full. Can't you see?" The Roshi
quietly said: "That is what your mind is like. You are so filled with your
own ideas and opinions that there is no room for even one drop of wisdom. Empty
yourself, empty your mind of all your preconceptions, empty your heart and your
soul of all unbecoming thoughts and feelings, and you will be filled to
abundance."
All of us know what is unworthy
of ourselves. Striving to gentle the untamed propensities in our character is a
type of purgation, a purification we can go through every day. This is what
Paul meant when he said to the people of Corinth, "I die daily" — day
after day he sought to be "reborn" interiorly. This is the
"daily initiation," of which W. Q. Judge spoke — life itself, with
its manifold joys and sorrows. Both have their temptations and trials, good
fortune so called being often more difficult to handle than are the day-by-day
frustrations and disappointments. The constant demand upon us to choose between
the greater and the less, the selfless and the self-centered, brings us face to
face with ourselves.
It is a matter of getting back to
first principles: we start from within, from our central self. What is
our motive? We tend to think of initiation as far removed from everyday
happenings, but every time we conquer a weakness, every time we have the
courage to see ourselves as we are, we undergo the testing by our higher self
of our lesser self; we are proving the mettle of our character. "Fire
tests gold, adversity proves strong souls" wrote Seneca, 1st-century AD
Roman statesman and philosopher. (Moral Essays, "On
Providence," 5, 9) Any form of intense suffering, particularly when self-caused
— through weakness of will, emotional instability, or being caught in a vortex
of thought beneath our private inner standard — may become an initiatory
experience. The word initiation means "beginning," the
conscious turning of a new leaf in our Book of Life. To have penetrated the
darkness of our individual hell and come up into the light of our radiant self,
able to meet its demands, is a kind of initiation.
When we inwardly take a stand, we
are forearmed for whatever comes; if we avoid doing so, when faced with really
severe challenges we are unprepared to act responsibly. Using the wheel as a
metaphor: by living in thought and aspiration as close as we can to the hub of
our being, the turning wheel of karma will not crush us; but if we live on the
rim or circumference of our lives, we are at risk of being ground down under
the karmic wheel. This can and does happen more than is necessary; and it's a
cruel thing to witness — and to experience. Nevertheless, we learn invaluable
lessons in humility and compassion: not only do we gain immeasurably, but
hopefully through it all we become sufficiently sensitized to help others see
that if they ascend the radius of their being toward the hub of themselves,
they will find guidance, strength, and a light upon their path. One of our
noblest opportunities is to give confidence to our fellow humans that, no
matter how fragile we may be or think we are, all of us have sufficient power
to live our lives in an honorable, thoughtful, and self-disciplined way. We
must allow our higher self to take charge of our life's destiny. Is there any
greater gift one can offer than assuring another he has what it takes to handle
his karma, with head high, regardless of how many times he may be knocked down?
We are not alone in our struggles. Everyone has some cross to bear, some
weakness of character to overcome; just so everyone has his or her strengths to
build on. Simply put: if we have the fortitude to "hang in there" no
matter how often we stumble or how far we fall, there is no failure, only
triumph.

Ricardo Maffia : The Higher Self
The Higher Self is the important principles in the sleeping consciences of every human being. Occasionally these principles into action. It is those moments when the Insight, Creative Intelligence, Understanding, Will Irresistible, Love and Brotherhood manifests itself most often unintentionally.
The goal of those in Path is active through reflections on their life experiences to realize a logic in everyday events and have the perception that there is something Infinite within. It is the Atma or the projection of the Absolute in all of us. With this perception that gradually develops, the student intuits your life purpose, your Dharma. Life for him and a main reason for you to understand the question of his life and also the lives of others.
Feel a real sense that there is an interconnectedness of everything and everyone and that their actions affect everything and everyone in the proportion of strength and wisdom given to them. There will be ups and downs however gradually understand the ups and downs in your life and Try to correct them. Will enter the Path of responsibility and understanding and even more in the way of conscious action though with its ups and downs but for the better this understanding of variations in personal perceptions is the gradual manifestations of Buddhi, another attribute of the Higher Self.
Thus, the student develops the Creative Intelligence (Manas) which will enable you to do things that will add value to your life and the lives of others.
St. Paul said that the human being consists of spirit, body and soul.
Spirit is the essence of the Absolute in all us. Soul , Self ( Jung) is precisely the higher principles asleep we refer Higher Self. Body is our current personality that is tied to the Cross of Life and that when it enters the Path gradually the soul or higher self will begin to awaken.

This will not happen without existential crises, which is normal because we enter into a new reality and conscious for a long time or not, because each of us has a personal biography will be held this existential connection and Cross will become a Shining Path. Well, I think so and do not mean I'm right. Each person has their truth that must be respected and valued. Unity in Diversity is.

Ricardo Maffia : A MUDANÇA QUANTICA DO SEU PASSADO, PRESENTE E FUTURO

The MAHATMA LETTERS to A. P. SINNETT
from the Mahatmas M. & K. H.
Transcribed, Compiled, and with an Introduction by A. T. BARKER
View of the Chohan on the T.S.
Several good reasons given to K. H. by the Chohan why the T. S. should be a Brotherhood of Humanity.
****
for the Simla Eclectic T. S. {1880 or 1881}
The doctrine we promulgate being the only true one, must, — supported by such evidence as we are preparing to give become ultimately triumphant as every other truth. Yet it is absolutely necessary to inculcate it gradually enforcing its theories, unimpeachable facts for those who know, with direct inferences deducted from and corroborated by the evidence furnished by modern exact science. That is why Col H.S.O. who works but to revive Buddhism may be regarded as one who labours in the true path of Theosophy, far more than any other man who chooses as his goal the gratification of his own ardent aspirations for occult knowledge. Buddhism stripped of its superstitions is eternal truth, and he who strives for the latter is striving for Theos-sophia, Divine Wisdom, which is a synonym of truth.
For our doctrines to practically react on the so called moral code or the ideas of truthfulness, purity, self-denial, charity, etc., we have to preach and popularise a knowledge of theosophy. It is not the individual and determined purpose of attaining oneself Nirvana (the culmination of all knowledge and absolute wisdom) which is, after all only an exalted and glorious selfishness, but the self-sacrificing pursuit of the best means to lead on the right path our neighbour, to cause as many of our fellow creatures as we possibly can to benefit by it, which constitutes the true Theosophist.
The intellectual portions of mankind seem to be fast dividing into two classes, the one unconsciously preparing for itself long periods of temporary annihilation or states of non-consciousness owing to the deliberate surrender of their intellect, its imprisonment in the narrow grooves of bigotry and superstition, a process which cannot fail to lead to the utter deformation of the intellectual principle; the other unrestrainedly indulging its animal propensities with the deliberate intention of submitting to annihilation pure and simple in cases of failure, to millenniums of degradation after physical dissolution. Those "intellectual classes," reacting upon the ignorant masses which they attract and which look up to them as noble and fit examples to follow, degrade and morally ruin those they ought to protect and guide. Between degrading superstition and still more degrading brutal materialism the white dove of truth has hardly room where to rest her weary unwelcome foot. . . .
It's time that Theosophy should enter the arena. The sons of Theosophists are more likely to become in their turn Theosophists than anything else. No messenger of truth, no prophet has ever achieved during his life time a complete triumph, not even Buddha; the Theosophical Society was chosen as the corner stone, the foundation of the future religion of humanity. To achieve the proposed object a greater, wiser, and especially a more benevolent intermingling of the high and the low, of the alpha and the omega of society, was determined upon. The white race must be the first to stretch out the hand of fellowship to the dark nations, to call the poor despised "nigger" brothers. This prospect may not smile to all. He is no Theosophist who objects to this principle. . . .
In view of the ever increasing triumph and at the same time misuse of free-thought and liberty (the Universal reign of Satan, Eliphas Levi would have called it), how is the combative natural instinct of man to be restrained from inflicting hitherto unheard of cruelties and enormities, tyranny, injustice, etc., if not through the soothing influence of a brotherhood and of the practical application of Buddha's esoteric doctrines. For as everyone knows, total emancipation from authority of the one all pervading power or law called God by the Theists — Buddha, Divine Wisdom and Enlightenment or Theosophy by the philosophers of all ages — means also the emancipation from that of human law. Once unfettered [and] delivered from their dead weight of dogmatic interpretations, personal names, anthropomorphic conceptions and salaried priests, the fundamental doctrines of all religions will be proved identical in their esoteric meaning. Osiris, Chrishna, Buddha, Christ, will be shown as different means for one and [the] same royal highway to final bliss Nirvana. Mystical christianity, that is to say that christianity which teaches self redemption through one's own seventh principle — the liberated Para-atma (Augoeides) called by the one Christ, by others Buddha, and equivalent to regeneration or rebirth in spirit — will be found just the same truth as the Nirvana of mystical Buddhism. All of us have to get rid of our own Ego, the illusory apparent self, to recognise our true self in a transcendental divine life. But if we would not be selfish we must strive to make other people see that truth, to recognise the reality of that transcendental self, the Buddh, the Christ or God of every preacher. This is why even exoteric Buddhism is the surest path to lead men toward the one esoteric truth. As we find the world now, whether Christian, Mussalman or Pagan, justice is disregarded and honour and mercy both flung to the winds.
In a word, how, once that the main objects of the T. S. are misinterpreted by those who are most willing to serve us personally, are we to deal with the rest of mankind, with that curse known as the "struggle for life," which is the real and most prolific parent of most woes and sorrows and of all the crimes? Why has that struggle become the almost universal scheme of the universe? We answer, because no religion with the exception of Buddhism has hitherto taught a practical contempt for this earthly life, while each of them, always with that one solitary exception, has through its hells and damnations inculcated the greatest dread of death. Therefore do we find that struggle for life raging most fiercely in Christian countries, most prevalent in Europe and America. It weakens in the Pagan lands and is nearly unknown among Buddhist populations. (In China during famine and where the masses are most ignorant of their own or any religion, it was remarked that those mothers who devoured their children belonged to localities where there were the most of Christian missionaries to be found. Where there were none and the Bonzes alone had the field the population died with the utmost indifference.) Teach the people to see that life on this earth even the happiest is but a burden and an illusion, that it is but our own Karma, the cause producing the effect, that is our own judge, our Saviour in future lives, and the great struggle for life will soon lose its intensity. There are no penitentiaries in Buddhist lands and crime is nearly unknown among the Buddhist Tibetans. (The above is not addressed to you, and has nought to do with the work of the Simla Eclectic Society. It is meant only as an answer to the erroneous impression in Mr. Hume's mind of the "Ceylon work" as no theosophy.)
The world in general and Christendom especially, left for two thousand years to the regime of a personal God as well as its political and social systems based on that idea, has now proved a failure. If the Theosophists say, we have nothing to do with all this, the lower classes and the inferior races (those of India for instance in the conception of the British) cannot concern us and must manage as they can, what becomes of our fine professions of benevolence, philanthropy, reform, etc. Are these professions a mockery? And if a mockery, can ours be the true path. Shall we devote our selves to teaching a few Europeans fed on the fat of the land, many of them loaded with the gifts of blind fortune, the rationale of bell ringing, cup growing, of the spiritual telephone and astral body formation, and leave the teeming millions of the ignorant, of the poor and despised, the lowly and the oppressed, to take care of themselves and of their hereafter the best they know how. Never. Rather perish the Theosophical Society with both its hapless founders than that we should permit it to become no better than an academy of magic and a hall of occultism. That we, the devoted followers of that spirit incarnate of absolute self sacrifice, of philanthropy, divine kindness, as of all the highest virtues attainable on this earth of sorrow, the man of men, Gautama Buddha, should ever allow the Theosophical Society to represent the embodiment of selfishness, the refuge of the few with no thought in them for the many, is a strange idea, my brothers.
Among the few glimpses obtained by Europeans of Tibet and its mystical hierarchy of "perfect lamas," there is one which was correctly understood and described. "The incarnations of the Boddisatwa Padma Pani or Avalo-Kiteswara and of Tsong Kapa, that of Amitabha, relinquish at their death the attainment of Buddhahood — i.e. the summum bonum of bliss, and of individual personal felicity — that they might be born again and again for the benefit of mankind." (Rhys Davids) In other words, that they might be again and again subjected to misery, imprisonment in flesh and all the sorrows of life, provided that by such a self sacrifice repeated throughout long and dreary centuries they might become the means of securing salvation and bliss in the hereafter for a handful of men chosen among but one of the many races of mankind. And it is we, the humble disciples of these perfect lamas, who are expected to allow the T. S. to drop its noblest title, that of the Brotherhood of Humanity to become a simple school of psychology? No, no, good brothers, you have been labouring under the mistake too long already. Let us understand each other. He who does not feel competent enough to grasp the noble idea sufficiently to work for it, need not undertake a task too heavy for him. But there is hardly a theosophist in the whole society unable to effectually help it by correcting the erroneous impressions of the outsiders, if not by actually propagating himself the idea. Oh, for the noble and unselfish man to help us effectually in India in that divine task. All our knowledge past and present would not be sufficient to repay him. . . . Having explained our views and aspirations I have but a few words more to add.
To be true, religion and philosophy must offer the solution of every problem. That the world is in such a bad condition morally is a conclusive evidence that none of its religions and philosophies, those of the civilised races less than any other, have ever possessed the truth. The right and logical explanations on the subject of the problems of the great dual principles — right and wrong, good and evil, liberty and despotism, pain and pleasure, egotism and altruism — are as impossible to them now as they were 1881 years ago. They are as far from the solution as they ever were but, —
To these there must be somewhere a consistent solution, and if our doctrines will show their competence to offer it, then the world will be the first one to confess that must be the true philosophy, the true religion, the true light, which gives truth and nothing but the truth.
